2024 SZBL-HKUST/SZBL-HKU Joint PhD Program Admission Guideline

深圳湾实验室（以下简称“SZBL”）与香港科技大学、香港大学联合培养博士研究生，双导师指导，颁发合作院校博士学位。

Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as "SZBL") in cooperation with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) jointly train doctoral students with supervisors from both sides and award doctoral degrees from HKUST or HKU respectively.

SZBL (Provincial Laboratory of Life Informatics and Biomedicine), initiated by the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, is one of the second batch of Guangdong Provincial Laboratories. SZBL was founded under the provincial government’s initiative of establishing and developing a host of high-quality research institutes in Guangdong Province, with the aim of elevating some to National Laboratory status. SZBL is led by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality and the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and is jointly supported by research institutions and universities in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau. The research focus of SZBL are bio-data science, bioengineering, and biomedicine.

二、奖助学金 Scholarships

深圳湾实验室为联合培养博士研究生提供最高4年的奖助学金资助。其中，在香港学习期间，深圳湾实验室按合作院校博士生标准提供奖助学金。在深圳湾实验室学习期间，按实验室相关制度评定和发放奖助学金。

SZBL will provide Ph.D. candidates with a scholarship for up to 4 years. During the Hong Kong study period, SZBL will provide scholarship quantum in accordance with the standard for postgraduate students at relevant partner universities. During the study period in SZBL, the scholarship quantum will be in accordance with SZBL regulations.

三、学习费用 Tuition fee

学生需按时向香港的大学缴纳学费及其他相关费用。如学习年限超过最高资助年限（4年），超出费用由学生自理。学生必须按项目时间安排学习并遵守项目规定，否则将按规定赔偿实验室相关损失。

Students are required to pay tuition and other related fees directly to the relevant partner university from their scholarship. If the study period exceeds the maximum funding period (4 years), extra costs shall be borne by students. Students' study periods are planned according to their specific project schedule and students must comply with project regulations, otherwise, they are responsible for losses payable to SZBL.

四、申请要求 Application Requirements

在深圳湾实验室进行预报名时应满足以下条件：

(一) 学历：在认可院校取得学士学位，并有良好表现。

(二) GPA：硕士起点学生本科及硕士GPA均达到3.0/4；本科起点申请香港科技大学的学生GPA达到3.0/4；本科起点申请香港大学的学生GPA 须达到3.6/4。 

(三) 英语：申请人须具备下列其中一项英文能力:

a) 托福-网考（iBT）:香港科技大学：不低于80分；香港大学：不低于85分；

b) 托福-纸考（pBT）:不低于550分；香港大学除外；

c) 新托福（revised paper-delivered test）:60分(阅读、听力和写作总分)；香港大学除外；

d) 雅思(学术类):香港科技大学-总分:不低于6.5分，单科：不低于5.5分；香港大学-总分： 不低于6.5分，单科：不低于6分；

e) 香港大学：获得海外普通教育证书（GCE），国际普通中等教育证书 (IGCSE)或剑桥英语水平测试（CPE）： C级或以上。

(四) 申请人必须符合合作院校所有入学要求。

(五) 英语成绩必须保证在2024年10月仍在两年的有效期内。

注：如有下列情况之一，申请者无需提供托福或雅思成绩

1.母语为英语。

2.获得学士学位(或同等学历) 的学校以英语为教学语言。（需提供相关说明）

The following conditions should be met during the pre-registration phase through SZBL.

1. Academic qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a recognized institution with good performance.

2. GPA: For master's graduate applicants, their undergraduate and master’s GPA should be at least 3.0/4.0. For undergraduate applicants to HKUST, their GPA should be at least 3.0/4.0. For undergraduate applicants to HKU, their GPA should be at least 3.6/4.0.

3. English: Applicants must have one of the following English language certifications:

TOEFL-Internet-Based Test (IBT): 80 minimum for HKUST； 85 minimum for HKU;

TOEFL - Paper-Based Test (PBT): 550 minimum for HKUST; Not accepted by HKU.

New TOEFL (revised paper-delivered test): 60 minimum (total score for reading, listening, and writing) for HKUST; Not accepted by HKU.

IELTS (Academic): For HKUST, total score of 6.5 minimum, single subjects scores of 5.5 minimum; For HKU, total score of 6.5 minimum, single subject scores of 6 minimum.

For HKU: Obtained Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), or Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language (CPE): Grade C or above.

4. Applicants must meet all admission requirements of the partner universities.

5. All English test score reports should be valid by October 1, 2024.

Please note: Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if one of the following conditions are met：

1. Their native language is English.

2. They obtained a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a program with English language instruction. (Documentary proof shall be provided.)

五、申请流程 Application Process

  （一）申请时间 Application timeline

（二）预报名 pre-application

申请人须提前与深圳湾导师、香港导师进行充分沟通，三方达成意向后，可提交申请材料。

Applicants must communicate their intention to apply with the intended SZBL and partner university supervisors in advance and obtain their approval before submitting application materials. After both parties have reached an agreement, the submission can be done.

  （三）投递要求 Submission requirements

1. 请将申请材料分别保存为PDF文件，按照以下顺序扫描排列，根据下划线文字内容对文件命名，以PDF形式放在一个文件夹中并生成压缩包（打包发送）。

Please save the application materials as separate PDF files and save them in a compressed folder following the order specified in the application materials section below.

2. 邮件题目格式为：“姓名”+“港科大/港大联培”+“报考学科”+“深圳湾导师XXX” +“港科大/港大导师XXX”（示例：张三+港科大联培+化学+深圳湾导师李四+港科大导师王五）提交至指定邮箱admission@szbl.ac.cn，并同时抄送双方导师邮箱。

Please use the following email subject format: "Applicant’s Name" + "HKUST/HKU Joint Training " + "Discipline of Application" + "Name of Intended Supervisors" (Example: John Doe + HKUST Joint Training + Chemistry + SZBL supervisor Jane Doe + HKUST supervisor Jane Doe). Please email admission@szbl.ac.cn and cc both SZBL and partner university supervisors.

注：未抄送双方导师、邮件题目格式不符者，不予采纳。

Please note: The application will not be accepted if the format of the email subject fails to meet the requirements or if the email was not cc-ed to the intended supervisors.

3. 个人陈述（英文，见附件）；

4. 研究计划（英文，见附件）；

5. 推荐信两封（英文）；

6. 托福/雅思 考试成绩单扫描件；

7. 成绩单扫描件（须加盖毕业院校教务章；附上成绩单说明及打分规则，通常在成绩单的背面。）；

8. 身份证扫描件（香港申请人:香港身份证/港澳居民来往内地通行证；中国大陆的申请人:中国大陆身份证/ 港澳通行证/护照；其他申请人:护照），申请人选择提交一项即可；

9. 学历学位证书扫描件；

8. Scanned copy of identity documents (Hong Kong applicants: Hong Kong/Macao ID card or Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents; Applicants from the Chinese Mainland: ID Card or Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong or Macao or Chinese Passport; other applicants: passport).

9. Scanned copy of academic degree certificate.

注：

1. 原则上所有材料必须一次性提供，不接受补交。

2. 所有学历、学位、成绩、语言、推荐信等证明文件必须保证其真实性，如有虚假，后果自负。

3. 应届毕业生需提交在读证明扫描件，应届毕业生入学前必须获得学位证及毕业证，否则无法取得入学资格。

Please note:

1. All documents must be provided at the time of submission and no supplementary submission will be accepted.

2. All supporting documents, such as degree certificates, transcripts, language ability reports, and reference letters must be authentic, and applicants are responsible for any falsification.

3. Fresh graduates may first submit a copy of their proof of enrollment as a substitute for their degree and graduation certificate. Fresh graduates must obtain their degree and graduation certificate before admission procedures, otherwise, they cannot be admitted.
