On April 12, 2024, the awards ceremony for the Second Photomicrography Competition of SZBL was successfully hosted at the Guangming District Cultural Center. This event is a science and technology outreach initiative jointly organized by SZBL and the Guangming District Culture and Sports Center. It introduces attendees to the "beauty of life" within the microscopic world, shares a feast of micro-visuals, and explores the mysteries of biological phenomena.

Selected Award-winning Entries

Speeches were delivered by Zhang Xinhao, Vice Director of SZBL; Lin Xiang, Standing Vice-Chairman of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Association; H. Kami, Director of the Business Department at Nikon Health Care; and Gu Yi, Head of After-Sales for ZEISS Microscopes in China. In this competition, 2 first place prizes, 6 second place prizes, 10 third place prizes, and 15 excellence awards were presented. At the ceremony, several award-winning representatives spoke about the significance of their works, sharing their distinctive creativity and groundbreaking ideas. This discussion allowed attendees to once again appreciate the stunning impact of the fusion between science and art.

The event is designed to create a platform for researchers in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to showcase their work and engage in discussions, while also promoting the widespread adoption of technology and facilitating the sharing of research equipment. The competition drew significant attention and active participation from teachers and students across a wide range of schools. More than 600 students from the Shenzhen Affiliated School of Sun Yat-sen University, the Guangming Keenstar School Affiliated to Central China Normal University, and the Yulu School in Guangming District of Shenzhen took part in the event. During the outreach lecture, Mr. Sun Zhenglong, who leads the Bio-imaging Platform at SZBL, presented a lecture entitled "Microscope and Microscopic Imaging" to the students. His talk served as an excellent finale to the event.

Since its inception, the competition has elicited an enthusiastic response from a broad spectrum of researchers and micro-photography enthusiasts from SZBL and the Greater Bay Area. Following the preliminary selection, 82 entries were displayed, 29 of which came from researchers affiliated with 14 different institutions outside the SZBL. These contributors are from a variety of organizations, including Southern Medical University, Guangdong Provincial People's HospitalMacao University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Shenzhen People's Hospital, Shenzhen Synorgbio, the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Shenzhen University. During the voting and review phase, the entries amassed 151,000 views and received more than 139,000 valid online votes.

This event marks the second scientific competition on microscopic photography hosted by SZBL. The stunning entries vividly showcase the technical expertise, artistic flair, and intellectual approach of researchers from the Greater Bay Area as they delve into the microscopic world. Meanwhile, to enhance the public's scientific literacy and appreciation for art, the entries from this competition will be showcased across numerous schools and institutions throughout Shenzhen.
